What Our Clients Say
Civics Test & Citizenship FAQ
What if I score low on the practice test?
A low score on this practice quiz is a starting point, not a verdict. The official 2025 USCIS test is administered orally — a USCIS officer asks up to 20 questions and you need 12 correct to pass. If your practice scores are low, focus on the categories where you scored weakest and consider speaking with an experienced immigration lawyer to understand where you stand before filing your N-400 naturalization application.
Can I take the citizenship test in Spanish?
Generally, the standard USCIS naturalization test must be taken in English. However, there are important exceptions. If you are 50 years or older and have been a lawful permanent resident for 20+ years, or 55 years or older with 15+ years of permanent residence, you may take the civics test in your preferred language. If you are 65 or older with 20+ years of permanent residence, you qualify for the simplified 65/20 test — 10 questions, 6 correct to pass — and may take it in any language. Our bilingual immigration lawyer and team can help determine which version applies to your situation. Se habla español.
How is the 2025 USCIS civics test different from the previous version?
The 2025 civics test, implemented October 20, 2025, applies to anyone who filed Form N-400 on or after that date. The question bank expanded from 100 to 128 questions, the officer now asks 20 questions instead of 10, and you need 12 correct to pass instead of 6. Approximately 75% of the content carries over from the 2008 test, with 25% being new material focused on constitutional principles and civic values. A Seattle immigration lawyer can help you prepare for both the civics portion and the full interview.
What else does the USCIS naturalization interview cover beyond civics?
The naturalization interview covers more than the civics test. A USCIS officer will review your N-400 application verbatim, check your supporting documents, test your English reading and writing ability, and assess your good moral character — including tax history, any criminal record, and conduct during your time as a permanent resident. Many applicants who feel confident about civics are caught off guard by the application review portion. Working with an experienced immigration lawyer before your interview helps you prepare for every component, not just civics.
Do I need an immigration lawyer for a citizenship application?
Not always — many straightforward cases proceed without legal representation. That said, what appears simple often has complications: extensive travel history, prior immigration violations, missed tax filings, name discrepancies on documents, or questions about continuous residence. The USCIS filing fee for Form N-400 is non-refundable if your application is denied. A case review with an immigration lawyer before filing can identify issues worth addressing first. Attorney Lesley Irizarry-Hougan offers consultations to help applicants understand their options before committing to the process.
Can L.I.H. Law help with citizenship cases outside Washington State?
Yes. Because immigration law is federal, Attorney Lesley Irizarry-Hougan represents clients before USCIS regardless of which state they live in. Our immigration lawyer and bilingual team handle consultations through secure WhatsApp video, phone, and email — no travel to Seattle required. We serve English and Spanish-speaking clients in all 50 states.
